Knute Larson says he’s not a very good runner, but he’s kept at it. When he was struggling through a marathon someone told him to “Lean over, take shorter steps, one at a time.”
That advice is the foundation of his book, The Great Human Race, which was just re-released this month by BMH Books. Larson said, “…One step at a time is the only way to live life.”
Larson is a pastoral and personal coach who draws on 43 years as pastor in Ohio at The Chapel in Akron and Grace Church in Ashland. He writes candidly about running in the marathon of life. He knows it’s not easy. As a runner himself, Larson uses the imagery of running and compares it to the personal discipline of the Christian life.
Originally published more than 30 years ago, Larson considers this book applicable today. He believes that despite circumstances we are still responsible for our thoughts and actions, sense of love for others and our obedience. He acknowledges the pain that comes from training. He says that everyone has it in common and “the book looks at life honestly and says, ‘I need to decide to keep running and do it right.’”
In a time of fear and uncertainty, Knute Larson is not afraid to tackle issues of the heart and struggles that we all face. He said, “I’d like the book to be read by people who are going to be honest when they look in the mirror or look in their own hearts.” This updated edition of The Great Human Race includes study questions and additional resources to help the reader find courage one step at a time — toward the right finish.
“It’s about walking, running, and jogging together with Christ,” Larson said.
